New Anchorage DMV will open Monday
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Anchorage will have a new, larger DMV location starting Aug. 3 in the University Center. The location had a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday.
The old location on Benson Boulevard had 16 customer service stations, and now the new facility has 25 and a larger lobby.
“The DMV is also going to be utilizing an online application appointment system, what this means is you don’t have to come in and just wait inside the DMV or inside the mall,” Alaska Department of Administration Commissioner Kelly Tshibaka said. “As you wait for your turn in line, you can get online and make an appointment and be seen right away like you would at the doctor or at the dentist for your appointment. This allows us to reduce density in our space.”
The virtual queuing system will send customers a text message notifying them when a customer service agent is ready to help them.
“They did a good job at the old location in Spenard, but this location gives them so much more room, there’s more stations so they will be more efficient and people can get their transactions done more quickly,” Lt. Governor Kevin Meyer said.
The location was designed with COVID-19 considerations in mind, state officials say, and that’s why the new DMV location has taller walls and plexiglass barriers.
