ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The clouds move into Southcentral Friday with a chance of showers for Anchorage on Saturday. Much of the North Gulf Coast will see rain through the weekend.

Heavy rain is expected in the Interior starting Saturday evening and continuing through Monday. Some areas could see 2-4 inches of rain. Rivers are already running high due to several weeks of rainy conditions. According to the National Weather Service, sharp rises are expected on rivers including “the Chatanika, Chena, Little Chena, Salcha and Goodpaster as well as smaller creeks and tributaries across the Eastern Interior.” Larger rivers will see rises next week as the high water makes it way downstream.

NWS also put a Flood Warning in place for a glacier-dammed lake outburst until 10 a.m. Saturday for Mendenhall Lake and river. As of 6:36 a.m. Friday, Mendenhall Lake was at 7.3 feet. Flood stage is at 9 feet and the NWS forecasts the water will crest at 10.2 feet Friday evening. According to the NWS statement, at 9.4 feet, minor flooding will occur in yards along View Drive and at 10 feet, Mendenhall Campground will have up to three feet of water covering low-lying areas. If you live near the Mendenhall Lake and river, stay alert and be prepared to take action.
