710 new COVID-19 cases reported in Alaska Wednesday

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The Department of Health and Social Services is reporting 710 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday.

Ten of the cases were reported in nonresidents with one located in the Northwest Arctic Borough, one in Juneau, three in Anchorage and five in unknown locations.

No new deaths were reported on Wednesday, leaving the state total of deaths at 115 residents and one nonresident. The new cases bring the state total of COVID-19 cases in Alaska to 29,543 in residents and nonresidents.

The DHSS COVID-19 dashboard says at least 663 residents and nonresidents have been hospitalized with COVID-19. An additional 131 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 and another nine are hospitalized and suspected of having the virus. Of these patients, 22 are on a ventilator in the state.

The Anchorage Health Department data from Tuesday shows health care capacity is strained with indicators for inpatient beds and adult intensive care unit beds in the red. AHD said there are 117 out of 518 beds available and only 10 ICU beds available in the municipality. DHSS says statewide there are 444 inpatient beds and 44 ICU beds available.

The majority of new cases were reported in the Municipality of Anchorage with 381 in Anchorage, seven in Chugiak, 19 in Eagle River and one in Girdwood. A large number of cases continue to be reported in the Bethel Census Area with 18 new in Bethel and 65 new cases in surrounding areas.

A total of 954,276 COVID-19 tests have been conducted in the state since cases were first reported, although that number does not reflect a unique number of individuals.
