A match made in heaven: Legacy Jiu-Jitsu team up with the Avalanche Wrestling Club to open a new gym
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The pandemic has forced many small businesses to shut down, but for the Avalanche Wrestling Club and Legacy Jiu-Jitsu, they are attacking it like it is their next match. The two organizations have now teamed up to open a new and much bigger location.
It is located at 501 W International Airport Road, Unit 28, right across the parking lot from their old location. They are set to start classes and training on Monday.
South High School wrestling head coach and Avalanche Wrestling coach Randy Hanson said, “It’s kind of up in the air what our wrestling season is going to look like both for high school and for the club, we are doing our best to provide an outlet for these youth and some of these adult classes who do adult classes at legacy, we are trying to follow the city mandates but provide something for everyone to come.”
When you walk into the gym it is shocking just how much space they have; there is a room that is full of mats where social distancing can be easily done. There is also another smaller “blue mat” room that will be used for smaller classes or individual training. Normally, the AvalancheWwrestling Club has well over 100 kids who participate but with the pandemic, it has dwindled the numbers, making it an even more ideal time to combine with Legacy Jiu-Jitsu to try and bring more people into the world of wrestling.
Jordan Kontra owner of Legacy Jiu-Jitsu says, “The goal has always been to teach martial arts which is super cool, but the part we focus on the most is building a community here, and we are part of a larger community and the opportunities to give back have been substantial and we have taken every opportunity we have been able to give back to the larger community as well.”
Kontra added that it isn’t exactly easy to make friends as an adult, so why not come to a place where you can not only stay in shape but become apart of a community where everyone has at least one thing in common. Legacy Jiu-Jitsu and The Avalanche Wrestling Club offer a plethora of classes that nearly every age group can participate in and they are excited to open their doors and kick off 2021 on a high note.
