Police shut down part of the arterial highway to conduct initial investigation Saturday
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - UPDATE, 12:45 p.m. Sunday: Anchorage police have arrested a 25-year-old man following a death investigation that shut down part of the Glenn Hwy. on Saturday.
According to the Anchorage Police Department, Brian McGee is being charged in a fatal hit-and-run collision that took place near the South Eagle River exit early Saturday morning, after he reportedly hit a pedestrian and fled the scene, failing to stop and render aid.
Police sent the update in a NIXLE alert that was released around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. In the community message, APD said dispatchers received a call on Saturday at around 8:40 in the morning of a potentially dead pedestrian on the Glenn Hwy. near the Hiland exit. Police responded and conducted an hours-long investigation, with detectives eventually determining that a man who was driving on the Glenn Hwy. had struck a pedestrian, according to the Sunday release.
The victim’s identity has not been made public. McGee has thus far been charged with Failure to Render Aid, though APD said additional charges may be forthcoming, and the investigation remains ongoing.
UPDATE, 3:10 p.m. Saturday: Anchorage Police say all lanes at the S. Eagle River exit are open following a death investigation that shut down part of the Glenn Hwy. early Saturday morning.
UPDATE, 2:20 p.m. Saturday: Southbound lanes closed at the south Eagle River exit and westbound lanes of the overpass remain closed, according to APD. There is no public safety threat at this time, APD is asking drivers to take an alternative route.
UPDATE, 11:23 a.m. Saturday: All southbound lanes of the Glenn are still closed. According to APD, the westbound lane of the overpass at the South Eagle River exit is also closed. Eastbound traffic can travel over the bridge to Eagle River Road. The frontage road is closed.
