UPDATE: Man identified in deadly Old Seward crash

One person is dead and police are warning Anchorage residents to use caution out on the roads Wednesday morning after rain froze overnight turning roads into ice rinks.

Police dispatchers told KTUU that a man was killed after his Lincoln SUV lost control and plowed into a light pole on the 4600 block of the Old Seward Highway. The crash happened some time before 4 a.m. on Jan. 3.

The victim was later identified as 28-year-old Roy Miller Jr., police said. MJ Thim, spokesperson with APD, said that both weather conditions and rate of speed played a part in the crash.

In a community alert issued minutes later, Anchorage Police Department warned other drivers ahead of the early morning commute to use caution on highways and side streets after freezing rain has created poor road conditions.

Shortly after, the National Weather Service issued an official advisory for winter weather, to remain in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.

"Ice will make for slippery road conditions during the morning commute," the NWS advisory stated. "Rain will change over to snow later this morning with 1 to 3 inches of accumulation expected."

The service wrote that side roads and sidewalks especially will be "extremely slick."
