A cargo vessel is being tugged after being adrift 7 mile north of Akutan Island.

The United States Coast Guard reported the container ship Laura Maersk adrift Friday at around 8 p.m. after the engine room caught fire causing it lose power.

An official at the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation says the ship is being escorted to land safely.

"The thing that made this one very high profile high risk was how close it was to land." said on scene coordinator Geoff Merrell. " We had to get tugs and assets very quickly because we did not have a lot of time to stop the drift of the ship before it was in danger of running aground."

No injuries or pollution were reported.
