Alaska first responders undergo urban search and rescue training

A lot of search and rescue situations in Alaska involve someone missing or injured in the wilderness, but in the case of an earthquake or avalanche, first responders need to be equally prepared to search for or treat someone in a collapsed building.

Recently, first responders all over the state underwent a week-long training session taught by the Alaska National Guard on urban search and rescue techniques.

On Monday, KTOO reporter Matt Miller spoke with Channel 2's Maria Downey about why training opportunities like this one are important for Alaska’s first responders.
