An Anchorage couple says their 53-year-old son has gone missing after he was released from Providence Hospital nearly a week ago.

Parents of Joe Grant Orand say he was admitted to the hospital for mental health problems on the afternoon of Nov. 18. He was released the following day.

A cab driver picked Orand up from the hospital and took him to his house, but Orand didn’t have a key to get in, according to his mother Jolene. The cab driver was taking Orand back to Providence, when he got out of the vehicle near Tudor Road and Checkmate Drive. His parents say he hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

Orand suffers from bipolar disorder, and has visited Providence at least four times since August, his mother says.

The couple says they’ve spent the week checking various shelters. They also say he was not transferred to the Alaska Psychiatric Institute and has not returned home.

Orand is described as white, 5’10” and balding with blonde hair. His mother says he recently lost a lot of weight while struggling with mental health issues, and only weighs about 128 lbs. He was last seen wearing black clothes supplied by the hospital.

A missing persons report has been filed with the Anchorage Police Department.
