Bartlett High School students celebrated the Chinese new year by cooking dumplings in class.

Bartlett is the only high school in the Anchorage School District that offers classes in the Chinese language.

"It is the hardest language for an English speaker to learn and that's personally why I took it up," said senior Brandon Lavoie, "I wanted to have a challenge."

The class has two Chinese graduate students that intern. They are funded through the Confucius Institute.

2019 is the year of the pig in Chinese tradition.

"This is going to be the year that everybody will be happy, healthy, and prosperous," said Chinese language teacher Yan Wang.
