Anchorage woman arraigned for 3-year-old daughter's murder

Kelsey Jackson was arraigned Friday afternoon on charges of first degree murder and second degree murder.

A judge set bail conditions at $350,000 with electronically-monitored house arrest.

Jackson was found in the backseat of a Ford Edge early Wednesday morning with her 3-year-old daughter "obviously deceased" when police arrived. It appeared the daughter

had been stabbed multiple times

Jackson was also injured, and when detectives contacted her after the she taken to the hospital, they saw cuts that they believed to be consistent with a suicide attempt.

Her bail was initially set at $10,000 cash, but she could not be released without court approval.

At her arraignment Friday, an assistant district attorney asked that bail be set at $200,000.

"Obviously the state is sensitive to the fact that there are likely underlying mental illnesses that drove the conduct here, but the fact that there could be mental illnesses that caused this creates a danger to the community," Assistant District Attorney Betsy Bull said. "Someone who presents such a danger, the bail should reflect that danger."

The child's father spoke during the arraignment.

"I stand by Kelsey's parents, and the grandparents of my daughter. I believe that bail should be set higher," he said.

Jackson's parents did not appear in the courtroom, but the prosecutor spoke on their behalf.

"Ms. Jackson lived with her parents," Bull said. "They're the grandparents of the minor child. They did not want to participate here today. It was too soon to deal with what's going on, but they wanted us to let the court know that they support that the bail should be set higher and had questions about why it was so low."

Jackson did not vocalize any questions about the charges brought against her. Other than 'yes' and 'no' answers to the judge's questions, her only comment was, "I just don't want to talk about it."

Jackson will be appointed a public defender.

The judge set Jackson's bail at $250,000 cash corporate and $100,000 cash performance. If she does make bail, she will be on house arrest and electronically monitored.

Her next hearing is scheduled for March 26.
