Bake sale raises $1,800 for victims of Polaris Bar and Hotel fire

A two-hour bake sale in Nome raised more than $1,800 for the victims of a deadly fire at the Polaris Bar and Hotel.

“We really felt for those who lost their homes and all of their belongings. There are several people who are living in there,” Reba Lean, public relations manager for Norton Sound Health Corporation said.

, causing several people to lose personal belongings and in need of shelter.

“We wanted to do something to help make up for their loss so we put on a bake sale,” Lean said.

NSHC sponsored the sale, but it required dozens of sweets from employees, volunteers and community members. Lean said nearly every item sold out during the sale.

The money will be evenly distributed to those who were displaced by the fire, according to Lean.

Although the Red Cross stepped in to help the victims of the fire, Lean said anyone who may still be in need of clothing or other supplies can contact her at 907-443-9674 to be put in contact with additional resources.
