Fairview Recreation Center hosted a party Thursday night to generate enthusiasm about heading to the ballot box and to teach the community about Anchorage’s new vote-by-mail system.

The so-phrased "Ballot Box Bash" consisted of free music, food and a performance by dance troupe Rhythm of Light, as a way to educate and celebrate civic engagement.

The city’s parks and recreation commissioner, Kelly Chang, said the event was held in order to rectify the lost sense of community that comes from voting by mail.
