A missing crew member of the Coast Guard Cutter Douglas Munro was found dead early Sunday morning while the ship was in Dutch Harbor awaiting repairs.

USCG 17th District Lieutenant Brian Dykens says 19-year-old Seaman Ethan Kelch of Virginia was reported missing late Saturday night.

A search team comprised of Douglas Munro crew members, Unalaska Police and Fire department personnel, and an Air Station Kodiak MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew found Kelch on the west side of Amaknak Island Sunday morning.

Dykens says Kelch was unresponsive. First responders performed CPR and transported him to the local clinic, where he was pronounced dead.

“As we mourn his death, we send our deepest condolences to Seaman Kelch’s family and loved ones,” Rear Adm. Matthew T. Bell Jr., Coast Guard 17th District commander said in a statement.

Coast Guard Investigative Service agents are working with local law enforcement to investigate Kelch's death.
