Cowboy action shooting comes to Birchwood
The Alaska 49’ers Cowboy Action Shooting club is reliving the Old West with a single action shooting competition at Birchwood Shooting Range.
The club’s president ‘Flaco Joe,’ says the event called ‘Shootout under the Midnight Sun’ brings together participants of all ages to competitively shoot, wearing period outfits.
Participants are only able to use firearms that existed in the 1900s.
The fun doesn’t stop there, Flaco Joe says everyone who joins the Alaska 49’ers develops their own persona and gets a cowboy badge that’s unique to the member.
The event taking place this weekend is the club’s territorial championship, on the weekend of July 7 – July 9, the Golden Heart Shooting Society will hold the Alaska state championship in Fairbanks.
Flaco Joe says members have come from far and wide to compete this weekend, there are participants from the Lower 48 and from as far afield as Canada and Australia.
The weekend event will continue Sunday July 3rd from 9:00am until 3:00pm.
Visitors who would like to watch the weekend’s events need to contact the Alaska 49’ers Cowboy Action Shooting club before coming down. The club will provide hearing and eye protection.
