Death investigation underway after dog finds human skull in Anchorage woods

A human skull was found in Anchorage-area woods and now authorities are investigating into who the person was, and how he died.

A resident reported the find initially made by their dog while on a walk in a wooded area in the 7400 block of Campbell Airstrip Road.

The dog reportedly found body remains, including what was later determined to be a human skull by the state medical examiner.

APD said the SME determined that the body was a man who had "extensive dental work," but his identity and how he died remain a mystery.

"Detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying the victim," APD wrote in a statement. At this time, it is not known how long the skull was in that location.

APD spokespeson MJ Thim said that due to the snowpack in the area, it is not known whether the skull is the only bone in those woods.

"It's winter time, and we really don't know how much is there at this time," Thim said. "It could just be the skull, or it could be more."
