Delta flight makes emergency landing on Shemya Island

A Delta Airlines Boeing 767 en route to Seattle from Beijing made an emergency landing on a far flung island in the western Aleutian Islands on Monday.

According to Delta, after experiencing a "potential engine issue," flight 128 was able to land safely on the island's 10,000 foot runway, originally built in 1943, on what's now called Eareckson Air Station.

Eareckson is operated and maintained by the JBER-based 611th Air Support Squadron, a unit of the Pacific Air Forces Regional Support Center.

According to the U.S. Air Force, approximately 100 contractors inhabit the island to help operate the COBRA DANE radar in support of the 21st Space Wing.

Delta airlines says another plane has been sent to the island to continue the service to Seattle for the 194 passengers.
