Fairbanks man sustains brain damage in dispute over bicycle ownership

An altercation turned violent in Fairbanks after a man confronted another man over the ownership of a bicycle. One of the men is now in critical condition, and the other is in police custody.

Fairbanks police detailed the assault in a report Thursday, saying Hoe Young Kim, 31, struck another man in the face, causing him to fall to the ground and sustain brain damage.

Witnesses saw the events, which unfolded in Fairbanks in front of the bus transit park on Wednesday afternoon. The incident was also caught on security camera around 3 p.m.

The victim, a 36-year-old man, was reportedly pushing a bicycle outside of the bus station when Kim came outside, claiming that bicycle belonged to his friend.

Kim then proceeded to allegedly slug the victim in the face, knocking him to the ground. According to a report from FPD, the victim's head hit the concrete with enough force to cause brain bleeding and swelling.

The victim was emergency lifted to Providence Medical Center in Anchorage via a helicopter. He is listed in critical condition, FPD said.

As for Kim, after the assault, he took off on the disputed bicycle. Police tracked him to the Fairbanks Rescue Mission around 7 p.m., where he was arrested for assault and robbery, and taken to the Fairbanks Correctional Center.
