A former Bristol Bay Borough Police officer was killed on the job in Cowlitz County, Wash. on Saturday.

According to the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office, 29-year-old Cowlitz County Deputy Justin DeRosier was fatally shot while contacting a disabled vehicle near Kalama River Road in Kalama, Wash. at approximately 10:11 p.m. on Saturday.

DeRosier was dispatched to a disabled vehicle blocking the roadway and was shot shortly after arriving at the scene.

Responding officers undertook life-saving efforts before DeRosier was taken by LifeFlight to PeaceHealth Medical Center in Vancouver, Wash., where he succumbed to his injuries.

On Sunday night, Cowlitz County authorities said that after responding to reports of a suspicious person in Kalama, officers engaged with and ultimately shot a suspect who died from his injuries.

The Cowlitz County Coroner's Office identified the man as 33-year-old Brian Dellaann Butts of Longview, Wash. according to a

, which named him as the primary suspect in the killing of Deputy DeRosier.

In a press release Sunday, Bristol Bay Borough Interim Police Chief John Rhyshek said DeRosier began his police career as a seasonal officer for BBBPD in 2011, working in King Salmon for two summers while attending Washington State University.

Rhyshek says DeRosier earned a degree in Criminal Justice from WSU in 2012.

"DeRosier sought out a Law Enforcement career closer to his family and soon to be wife Katie Smart DeRosier," Rhyshek said in the statement.

He took a job with the Whitman County Sheriff's Department, serving part-time with the Oakesdale Town Marshals Office before moving to the Cowlitz County Sherriff's Department in 2016, where he served as a Patrol Deputy, SWAT Officer, and boat operator.

DeRosier leaves behind his wife Katie and 5-month old baby girl.
