GCI employees' information compromised
The names and social security numbers of all of GCI's then-employees were stolen by a contractor in 2015.
In a statement, GCI says an employee of The Siegfried Group, who was contracting for GCI in 2015, stole a file with the information.
It affects any GCI employee who worked for the company as of June 30, 2015. A spokesperson says the company currently employs about 2,300 people.
The Siegfried Group notified GCI of the theft last week. In the statement, GCI says there is no evidence that the information was given to a third party or otherwise used improperly.
GCI says it is working with The Siegfried Group, a forensic investigation firm and law enforcement to better understand what happened. The company is offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protection to its employees through March 31, 2020.
Employees can ask for additional support through the human resources department.
The company says its IT and network systems were not hacked or otherwise compromised, and that no customer information was affected.
