Returning safe from a multi-state battle against dangerous wildfires, the Gannett Glacier Fire Crew from Palmer is back home and looking forward to a little R and R.

Fighting fires in Idaho, Utah, Montana and California, the Gannett Glacier Fire Crew left their mark on the 2018 wildfire season, and without any injuries to crew members.

"We were pretty fortunate this year, honestly,” Shane Semenuk told KTUU. “We were pretty safe. Didn't have any major issues or close calls, by any means. Definitely playing it safe. We did good at that this year, I think."

Crew members reported fighting fire in vastly different terrain from what they're used to in Alaska. They battled the Delta Fire in Northern California, a wildfire burning 60,705 acres and destroying 20 structures.

One crew member was fighting fire for the first time. He said bonding with the crew was a positive byproduct of the season.

Now, with the season almost at an end, it's time to begin closing up shop and hang up the gear until next fire season.

The Delta fire is now 98 percent contained, updated as of today by the U.S. Forest Service. A red flag warning remains in effect this evening due to gusty wind, low humidity and dry fuels.
