"I almost hit a polar bear!"
Check out this video of a polar bear encounter in far-north Alaska in the community of Utqiaġvik, formerly known as Barrow.
Brendan Hollis posted this
on YouTube and his Facebook page.
Hollis described it like this:
"Wild Polar Bears (Nanuq) here in Barrow Alaska! They ran across the road as I was driving and had to slam on my brakes! I was about 20 - 30 yards from them! Beautiful animals."
Hollis, who lives in Utqiaġvik and works at Ilisagvik Tribal College, says he was driving home from work for lunch when the sow bear and 2 year old came running across the road in front of him.
"I was taken by surprise and hit my brakes and proceeded to whip out my phone to video" Hollis said. "They came closer and closer until they were frightened off by another oncoming vehicle."
Hollis added "It was amazing to see how bold and how HUGE they are. Not timid at all. We are in their territory. Pretty incredible."
