'I saw something that looked like pig ears on the ground' — Tenants say mushrooms are growing in their hallways

Karen Sykes says she first found mushrooms growing in the hallway of her apartment in 2017.

She says management at the Arbor Pointe Apartment Homes on 25th Ave. were quick to clean it up, but then she says, she and another tenant found new mushrooms in the hallway again last week.

"I saw something that looked like pig ears on the ground and when I tried kicking it, it wouldn't move," Jaslyn Talia who lives on the first floor said. "And then I looked closer and it was a bunch of mushrooms kind of sprouted together."

Both women took several photos of videos of the mushrooms and called the management of the apartment building. Some of the carpeting on the first floor of building are wet.

Weidner Apartment Homes says the building manager never saw any mushrooms or the pictures of the fungus.

Sykes and Talia say that's because it was cleaned up before the property manager got there.

Gregory Cerbana from Weidner says they got reports that tenants heard what sounded like water leaking in the building and when crews opened a wall on the first floor they found a water leak.

Cerbana says they suspect the damage was created from the earthquake on Nov. 30th. He says the company takes great pride in its buildings and any repairs needed will be done as soon as possible.

Sykes and Talia say the company isn't doing enough to ensure the problem doesn't appear again. They want the company to replace the carpet and scrub down the floors with bleach. No word on if that will happen.

"You see how gooey the carpet is," Sykes said pointing at the area near the hole in the wall.

Cerbana says the drywall will be replaced as soon as the area dries up.
