"It truly is an Arctic Paradise” - Woman reacts to seeing two polar bears in Utqiaġvik
Imagine being on your lunch break, heading back to the office and boom! You are a couple of feet from two polar bears in Utqiaġvik.
“I have seen lots of bears up here, I’ve seen them several times, and every time I’m more excited.” Said Alaskan resident Monica Lugo, “This is the closest I’ve ever gotten to them. Luckily I was in the comfort of a vehicle...I actually screamed in the car. Not from fear, but from excitement.”
Lugo says she was driving back to work on Jan. 27, 2020 when she saw a group of people outside their vehicles with their guns.
“So I figured they were the bear guards and sure enough there were two bears on top of a snow berm.”
Lugo says the animals were there for a few minutes when one started to go towards the road.
“So the bear guards shot some of their firecracker rounds up in the air to scare them back.”
The point of scaring them Lugo says was to steer them away from town and have them head back on the ice.
Lugo says no one was hurt.
