Looking for an Alaska grown menu? There's an app for that

Alaska Grown has launched a new app that shows which restaurants in the state have menus with Alaska grown produce. So far, 37 restaurants have opted in to the program.

The app is free, just look for "Alaskagrown"-- one word.

It lists where the restaurants are located, what times each is open, and shows user submitted photos.

"The goal of the app -- its a USDA grant that we got -- is to bring attention and awareness to local restaurants that are serving Alaska grown produce," Johanna Herron, Market Access and Food Safety Manager for the Alaska Division of Agriculture said. "So the vision of what we do here is that all Alaskans will have access to Alaska grown food and products. We want all farmers to have that reliable consistent market."

Knik River Lodge, which recently went from having a French menu to an almost exclusively Alaska grown menu, says sales have increased since the switch.

"We have pretty much all side dishes right now (that are Alaska grown). We're working with local meat suppliers and hopefully will be 100 percent by the end of the season," Lars Larson the General Manager of Knik River Lodge said.
