A man was arrested Wednesday night, after a victim observed him exposing himself and masturbating in a vehicle. Not only that, but the vehicle the suspect was allegedly doing that in – it would turn out – was stolen that same night.

According to the Anchorage Police Department, 36-year-old Tyshaun Gray was observed sitting inside a dark green 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, masturbating and "trying to get the attention of others to watch."

"The victim called 9-1-1 after the exposure," police wrote in a Nixle alert. "When officers arrived, the suspect fled."

What proceeded was a chase through "numerous locations" in Anchorage, which caused what police called a "public safety threat," as Gray was driving recklessly.

The Investigative Support Unit (ISU), a new initiative-led group within APD, was activated to assist in pursuing the reckless driver. ISU found the Silverado and blocked it in, at the 200-block of Alaska Place, at which point Gray took off on foot.

"I don't have the details of exactly where the arrest happened, but they found him after the chase," MJ Thim, spokesperson with APD, said of the eventual arrest of Gray.

Gray was then transported to the Anchorage Jail on charges including vehicle theft, indecent exposure and failure to stop.

"This was the first takedown by the new Investigative Support Unit," police said.

The ISU is comprised of primarily senior patrol officers with APD. The team of eight will, as the name suggests, provide support to ongoing investigations, in order to help detectives.

"With ISU being available, we're looking to do some proactive measures with them – getting them out (and) addressing crime problems before they occur," said APD Deputy Chief Ken McCoy. "Having eight officers available to do that will be vital for us in accomplishing that mission.... It's really going to assist us in making a dent in crime."
