He has appeared in Anchorage schools as a motivational speaker, but on Friday 40-year-old Donteh Devoe was arraigned in Anchorage Jail Court on felony charges of sexual abuse of a minor.

Devoe's once positive reputation is now under scrutiny after an Anchorage judge ruled that charges against him -- including sexual abuse of a minor and possession of child pornography -- were severe enough to consider Devoe a danger to the community.

Anchorage police say on Jan. 29 they were informed that Devoe was apparently engaging in a sexual relationship with a minor. Court documents say it was a teenager, someone he did not meet through his work as a motivational speaker.

Some members of Devoe's family attending the arraignment told Channel 2 that they were standing by him; that he is a man of God. But the alleged victim's mother called into the arraignment as a witness with an entirely different perspective.

"I think that Mr. Devoe is very good at manipulating women, young and old, with his words," the woman said. "He's very articulate. And after speaking with the victim, she has basically been brainwashed by the things that he has said to her."

Devoe's defense attorney argued for reduced pre-trial bail, saying Devoe is "not a flight risk" and that "he has no past similar offenses".

Despite the defense's pleas the judge set bail at $50,000 cash with a $50,000 performance bond.

"I think these measures are necessary in order to protect the public, and to protect the victim in this case, also," the judge said.

Devoe has been placed under house arrest where he will be monitored 24 hours per day. His court date is set for Thursday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m.
