The University of Alaska Anchorage has a new chancellor. University of Alaska president Jim Johnsen announced Wednesday that Dr. Cathy Sendeen will start the position September 15.

Sandeen is currently chancellor at the University of Wisconsin Colleges and the University of Wisconsin-Extension, which combined have an annual operating budget of $350 million. A release from the University of Alaska says Sandeen managed the reorganization of the two institutions’ structure and operations to save the Universities more than $8 million each year.

“Cathy will bring a great perspective on engaging our faculty and staff on strategies to increase enrollment and student success,” Johnsen wrote in the release. “My discussions with Cathy convinced me that she understands the range of issues facing UAA, and she is committed to supporting our faculty and engaging our alumni,” he continued.

Sandeen was among four finalists for the position. Sam Gingerich served as interim chancellor since July of 2017. Former Chancellor Tom Case retired that year after six years in the job.
