A new facility for children's emergency care will open next week.

The Children's Emergency Care space is located at Providence Alaska Medical Center's emergency department.

Providence said the space will allow for physicians and nurses to handle any type of pediatric emergency with 13 private treatment rooms.

"A child-friendly dedicated space can reduce anxiety for children and curtail stress parents feel when visiting an emergency room," Sandra Horning, M.D. said.

The new area will work alongside the Children's Hospital at Providence, which provides treatment for pediatric inpatient care.

Providence said pediatric trauma patients tend to have better outcomes when cared for in a designated pediatric setting.

Children's Emergency Care will begin taking patients on Tuesday, January 9.
