Today marked a special day on the Julian calendar, orthodox christmas.

The day is a time of celebration for followers of the Russian Orthodox Church and a time for giving.

Parishioners gathered this evening at Saint Tikhon to learn the meaning of the feast of nativity. Members tells us they attended the Christmas Eve Midnight Mass Saturday night. Then woke up to volunteer their time helping the less fortunate at Bean's Cafe.

On Monday, the Alaska Native Medical Center will hold its annual Russian Christmas celebration. The event is free and anyone is invited.

It's scheduled for two o'clock inside the lobby of the Anchorage Native Primary Care Center.

Russian Christmas can be tracked as far back as 1880.
