A new, 4.5 miles-long single track trail is in the works for mountain bikers on the Anchorage hillside.
The track, currently under development, will be north of the existing trails near Spencer Loop, according to a singletrack advocate.
But officials with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game are urging caution by future trail riders, warning that the area is a natural habitat for brown bears.
"This time of year does increase the chance of bear/human conflicts or close encounters," said Department of Fish and Game spokesman Ken Marsh.
Marsh says riders should enjoy the singletrack, but suggests limiting riding hours, and for riders to be aware of their surroundings.
"Late at night or early in the morning, that's when bears are active," Marsh said.
