Spenard Jazz Fest celebrates 10th anniversary
With International Jazz Day celebrated on Sunday, the folks behind the Spenard Jazz Fest filled the 49th State Brewing Co. for a party to kick off the upcoming 17 day festival.
Organizers say this is the 10th year for the festival, which will bring music to people mover buses, yard parties, a main stage and even include a jazz hike to Flat Top.
What started out as a one day festival showcase for local composers has morphed into a melody of events for local musicians, "now that original music component has sort of been pushed aside a little bit," Festival Director Yngvil Vatn Guttu said.
"What we're working on now is to up the skills and stakes for local musicians. Trying to push local musicians to become as good and as confident as music from anywhere else," she said.
The festival will run May 20th through June 5th in Anchorage.
