eeming with life and rumbling with volcanic activity, the windswept Aleutian Islands feature some of the most unique marine landscapes in Alaska, and the world – and not just above the surface either.
Earlier this summer, scientists with expertise from marine ecology to volcanology joined in an expedition spanning several weeks, venturing to learn more about the undersea environments below the Aleutians, and map areas previously never before seen by another human being.
The expedition is part of a larger government effort to map all of the seafloor along America’s coastline.
