More than 3,500 people hit the pavement in honor of heart health for the 41st Annual Alaska Heart Run on Saturday.

The event is an annual one geared towards getting the community active and moving while raising money for scientific research, education, and advocacy programs having to do with heart health.

Heart and stroke survivors - 131 of them - participated in the run, including heart transplant recipient Louie Shaw. He ran his first event this year, and wants to encourage everyone to stay active and consider becoming an organ donor.

"What I'm trying to champion is save a live and donate life," Shaw said. "Once you're gone, you can't use these parts, but if you can save somebody else's life - which they did for me - I'm here talking to you today. It's just been a blessing, and yeah, consider donating."

Saturday's event raised more than $250,000.
