A Ketchikan-based Coast Guard team and the Ketchikan Fire Department rescued three mariners whose boat caught fire near Ward Cove early Friday evening.

According to a Coast Guard 17th District release, Coast Guard Sector Juneau watchstanders received a report at 4:40 p.m. from a person on shore that 40-foot recreational boat Fjord was burning north of the airport with people on board.

A boat crew was launched from Coast Guard Station Ketchikan and a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Sitka.

The Coast Guard rescue boat and the Ketchikan Fire Department vessel Harry Newell got to the scene just 17 minutes after the call was received, and found that the crew members had extinguished the flames with help from a member of the Ketchikan Harbor Masters Office.

The Coast Guard boat towed the distressed vessel to Ward Cove where the fire department fully extinguished the fire.

No injuries were reported.
