Two killed near Liard Hot Springs on Alcan Highway
The Northern District of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are asking for help in an investigation over what they call "suspicious" deaths of two adults about 20 kilometers (14 miles) south of Liard Hot Springs, a popular stopover for motorists driving the Alaska Highway.
They are now calling the deaths a "double homicide" and released the names of the deceased. They are Chynna Noelle Deese, a 24-year-old of the United States, and Lucas Robertson Fowler, a 23-year-old of Australia. The families of the deceased have been notified and are traveling to Canada.
"This investigation is in its very infancy and it is not yet clear whether Lucas and Chynna were targeted or if this was a crime of opportunity. At this point, we have nothing to indicate that their deaths are linked to any other active and ongoing investigations in the area, or if there is a heightened risk to public safety."
Police say they found an blue 1986 Chevrolet van at the scene and want to speak with anyone with information about the vehicle.
The deaths occurred between Sunday, July 14, and Monday July 15. Officers were first alerted to the scene on Monday morning around 7 a.m. The police describe the area as "popular with nature enthusiasts and tourists."
Police are asking those who may have any information about the deaths to please call Fort Nelson RCMP at (250) 774-2700, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
