A federal law known as the Clery Act requires colleges and universities which receive federal financial aid to report crime statistics annually. To make that data easy to access, the U.S. Department of Education has created an online portal called the Campus Safety and Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool.

It contains crime and fire data for schools across the nation.

Seven years before University of Alaska-Fairbanks student Sophie Sergie was found murdered in a dormitory bathtub, Lehigh University student Jeanne Clery's life ended similarly, raped and murdered in her Pennsylvania dorm room in 1986.

Clery's parents lobbied Congress to require schools to disclose campus security and safety information, believe it would increase study safety.

Those efforts resulted in the Clery Act. Using data collected under its authority, the U.S. Department of Education has created an online portal that allows users, free of charge, to review the data.
