Volunteers honor fallen heroes at downtown Memorial Cemetery
At the Downtown Cemetery Sunday morning, the rain didn't stop the American Legion, VFW, and the Boy Scouts from seeking out the final resting places of over 300 fallen heroes and placing a flag, and cross with a poppy near the headstones.
Over the years, the organizations have researched and located the graves of veterans. They say this memorial is just a small token to show their gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
"Well I figure that the veterans who have died here gave their selves and possible their lives for their country and now they are here resting in peace and i think it is the least we can do is to come out here on a rainy day like this and place some flags and celebrate them a little bit," said Brett Spencer, Post Commander of VFW 1685.
The group will be back late Monday evening to pick up the flags and get them ready for next year.
