Yukon Quest: Dog team beats musher to Dawson City checkpoint
Over five hundred miles into the 2020 Yukon Quest and the trail seems to be taking a toll on mushers. Friday afternoon at the Dawson City checkpoint, veteran musher Richie Beattie’s dog team arrived before he did.
reported that Beattie’s dog team was picked up by a cross-country skier who saw the team running without musher miles outside of the checkpoint.
As for Beattie, he was picked up by fellow musher Rob Cook miles outside of the checkpoint.
“He said that he’d been super tired the whole way and there had been a couple of times he’d lost the trail and fallen asleep,” Cooke told the Yukon News. “He said he came to and his dogs were halfway down the trail.”
Beattie was able to reunite with his team at the Dawson City checkpoint. The Two Rivers musher is currently in ninth place and taking a 36-hour mandatory layover in Dawson.
