Mahala Ashley Dickerson was 91 when she was interviewed by Maria Downey in 2004. She died three years later after a lifelong legacy of fighting for equality, both in her birthplace of Mobile, Alabama and in Alaska, where she moved and became the first Black woman to homestead here in 1958.
