An inside look at subsistence whale hunting

It's an ancestral practice for survival, the subsistence whale hunt, and the spring hunt is now underway. The Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission says its mission is to "safeguard the bowhead whale and its habitat to defend the Aboriginal subsistence whaling rights of its members and to preserve the cultural and traditional values of our communities." During the spring and fall hunts, the focus is to provide a major source of subsistence food for the whole community, starting with providing for the elders.
