ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - It’s been a wild week for wildlife in the Anchorage area. From fighting moose to a donut-seeking bear, residents are reporting interesting encounters.

Early Saturday, Emily Schubert and her husband woke up to loud crashing noises. Two large bull moose were having a ferocious fight in their midtown Anchorage backyard.

”I just flipped open the bedroom window and was like- ‘Wait is this really happening here?’ And then I turned to my husband, and I was like — I hope the camera’s caught that!”

Security cameras captured the whole ordeal including the moose crashing through the couple’s metal fence several times. Surveying the damage in the morning, Schubert found it all a little shocking.

“Going through a fence like it was a twig,” Schubert said, adding that while she wasn’t pleased, everything could be repaired.

On Tuesday morning Andreea Koski also had a wildlife encounter at her Eagle River home. Sometime during the night, a huge brown bear attempted to bash-in her garage door, leaving claw marks on the outside.

The bear tore the back panel off a truck that was parked in the driveway. Koski said she knows why it wanted to get inside.

“The bear loves donuts!”

Koski and her husband own Jason’s Donut’s in Eagle River. They use the truck to transport donut smelling trash and the sweet smell lingers inside. She said she’s not surprised that a hungry bear might find the smell of donuts irresistible. Even so, she’s hoping he doesn’t come back.

Fish and Game is reminding people that male moose are currently in the rutting season which can make them aggressive and unpredictable. They’re also asking anyone who sees a brown bear in an Anchorage neighborhood to report it immediately.
