ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Starting on Monday, Alaskans north of the 60th parallel may drive with studded tires, with the exception of Anchorage residents who must wait until October, according to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.

Alaskans south of the 60th parallel — as well as Anchorage residents — must wait until Oct. 1 before they can make the switch to studded tires. The law allows for those southern residents to drive with studs until April 14, 2025, according to the DOT. The law also restricts motorists on any paved portions of the Sterling Highway from driving with studs between those dates.

For Alaskans north of latitude 60 degrees north, that window to drive with studded tires extends from Sept. 16 through April 30.

Drivers with studded tires prior to these dates may be ticketed by state or local police, unless an emergency order goes into effect delaying the deadline, as it has on occasion in past years.
