ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The Anchorage Wolverines have announced their latest head coach, who was also their first head coach.

Mike Aikens returns as the Wolverines’ bench boss after coaching the junior hockey program during its inaugural season in 2021-22.

“Coach Aikens, who served as the first head coach in franchise history, was instrumental in laying the foundation for the organization’s identity, culture, and success,” the team said in a press release. “We are excited to welcome Coach Aikens back to the bench and look forward to the impact he will have as we prepare for the upcoming season.”

Aikens led the Wolverines to a 33-19-4 record and an improbable run to the North American Hockey League’s Robertson Cup Championship game in his first stint. He has spent recent years as an assistant coach for St. Lawrence University, a Division I institution, having coached at the NCAA, NAHL, USHL, BCHL, and AWHL levels.

Aikens replaces Nick Walters after two seasons and two playoff appearances with the program.

The Wolverines have seen success in their first four seasons as an organization, posting a 136-74-25 regular-season record with three playoff appearances.
