AOTW: David Norris ascends to Mount Marathon glory once again

SEWARD, Alaska (KTUU) - At this point, the question seems to be not “if” David Norris will win Mount Marathon each year, but rather how he’ll choose to do it.

Norris inched himself closer to the all-time win record in the event this year with the renowned Fairbanks mountain runner earning his sixth victory in six treks up and down the 3,022-foot peak.

“I’m grateful I can just keep doing it,” Norris said following the race.

Finishing this year’s race in a time of 42 minutes, 30 seconds, Norris fell short of eclipsing his record time of 40:37, set a year earlier.

“I was trying to put a target on getting to the top in record time,” Norris said. “I didn’t get to the top all that fast ... so I could kind of settle in and play it safe.”

With the finish, Norris now joins Ralph Hatch, Sven Johanson and Brad Precosky in the six-time winners pen. All four trail the all-time wins leader, Bill Spencer, by just two.

“I feel like every year I race, the more I learn about the tradition here and all the people that did it before us,” he said. “It’s very cool just to be a part of this big, historic race.”
