FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU) - All schools and extracurricular activities in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District are cancelled Tuesday due to heavy snowfall and difficult road conditions, district officials announced Monday night.

The district said the decision was made in advance because the heaviest snowfall is expected overnight (Monday into Tuesday), allowing families more time to plan.

Officials said the road conditions across the borough are already difficult to drive on, and student and staff safety is the district’s top priority when making weather-related decisions. The district said it consulted multiple sources, including road crews and transportation staff, before deciding to cancel classes and activities.

School is expected to resume as scheduled Wednesday. The district said it would update the community if plans change.

Only designated staff are expected to report to work at their regular time or as soon as it is safe to do so.
