ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The state will be getting federal disaster assistance for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough windstorm that happened in December of last year, FEMA said.

The severe storm brought hurricane-force gusts that damaged homes and knocked out power for thousands of people in early December.

Power outages spanned multiple areas of Southcentral Alaska, but multiple in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough lasted for days.

The American Red Cross of Alaska opened a shelter for people without power or damage to their homes.

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough and the state both declared a disaster due to the damage the week it happened.

The announcement from FEMA said the federal disaster assistance is meant to “supplement recovery efforts.”

“Public Assistance federal funding is available to the state, tribal and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair and replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storm in Matanuska-Susitna Borough,” FEMA said.
