ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - After nearly 50 years in business, the Crossroads Lounge in Fairview is shutting its doors. The bar’s long-time owner is retiring after working more than 40 years and has put the bar up for sale. Saturday will be the last day it is open.

For long-time customers and employees, the news is bitter-sweet. The bar with the logo “Where friends meet” has been a neighborhood gathering place for decades.

“Most of us here that come in here, we live in the neighborhood, we all live in the area,” said bartender Aislinn Martinson. “And so it’s really nice. I’ve met some of my best friends here, working here. And it’s sad. And we’re definitely gonna miss it.”

Rusty Humphries was having a drink on Wednesday. Humphries did a lot of remodeling work in the bar in the early 1980s. But Humphries didn’t build the original building. That happened sometime during the 1950’s when it started life as a Presbyterian Church in downtown Anchorage. The building was moved to its present site in Fairview, remodeled and opened as the Crossroads in 1978.

“I think the thing that’s most special about it is, it’s not special. It’s just a regular neighborhood bar,” said customer Ben Fletcher.

“The architecture here is as if it’s been here forever. And that’s kind of the feeling you get when you come in here, just regular people of Anchorage. It’s not trying to have a thing. It’s just here, and it’s good.”

Regulars say it will be hard to replace the spot where they’ve been welcomed for so long, where weddings, wakes and countless birthdays have been celebrated along with the many sporting events the bar is known for.

On Saturday, the community is invited to a day-long celebration that is also a chance to say goodbye. The event features live music that starts at 9:00 p.m. A special split-the-pot raffle will be held to benefit employees with a drawing scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Crossroads will be open regular hours Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 a.m.
