ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Orphaned brown bear cubs at the Alaska Zoo enjoy an early morning breakfast.

Zoo curator Sam Lavin said their breakfast typically consists of dog kibble, dog formula and a little bit of beef and produce.

Lavin said the zoo doesn’t know what happened to the mother of these cubs.

“We have three brown bear cubs; we have his two siblings. They all came from King Salmon. We don’t know what happened to mom; sometimes we do, sometimes we don’t. This time we don’t,” Lavin said.

Lavin said the cubs are still very dangerous even though they are young.

“We don’t go in with brown bear cubs. We call it ‘protected contact’. We always have a barrier between them and us,” Lavin said. “They still have teeth and claws, and he looks nice and gentle, but he’s like 75, 80 pounds.”
