TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW/Gray News) - Healing continues for Audrey Austin following a brutal dog attack back in July, when she was 24 weeks pregnant, that changed her life forever.

“I’m going to stay strong, and I’m going to keep moving, and it’s going to take time to forgive the person, but I forgave the dog,” Austin said.

On Thursday, Oct. 1, she wrapped up an eye appointment in Kansas City before making her way back to Topeka. It’s still one of many treatments Audrey is undergoing to regain her appearance.

“My first surgery for my nose—they’re going to do a forehead flip, where they’re going to take skin from my forehead and bring it to my nose,” she said.

But another thing added to her plate is caring for her newborn twins. Kasai and Kamyiah were born at just 38 weeks.

Audrey says because of the dog attack, her delivery wasn’t easy.

“My body has been under so much anesthesia and so much surgeries that I also think [it] put a strain on my babies,” Austin said.

The twins remain in the NICU, but it’s not stopping Audrey from being present.

“I see them in the mornings. [I see] them every day. I come up here, spend the night,” Austin said.

Alongside looking forward to bringing her babies home soon, Audrey is taking one step at a time in turning the page on this chapter of her life.

“It’s life. I mean, eventually, I’m going to grow from this. Eventually, I’m going to heal inside to not worry about what’s on the outside,” Austin said. “I’m still trying to get everything going for my babies when they come home.”

Audrey tells 13 NEWS that she has not been able to work since the dog attack. She’s currently seeking assistance from the community as she navigates this new chapter in her life. Her GoFundMe can be found here.
